Avengi Ja Nahin - Rabbi Shergill
Ayan | 25 06 2008“The voice behind popular songs like Bulla Ki Jaana and Tere Bin, Rabbi Shergill, has returned with “Avengi Ja Nahin. His debut album Bulla was an undisputed hit across the nation despite zero money spent on advertising and the only promotion being a brilliant video and word of mouth publicity.” - Harry Jerry
Incorporating the simplest of instruments, intertwined with deep and meaningful lyrics, the album focusing on social issues like female foeticide (which is sex selective abortion, the practice of selective infanticide against infants of an undesired sex), rights of the girl child and racism. This piece includes his experience of being stared at while in London for wearing a turban to prenatal sex determination, still a problem in rural India. Many of you may be able to relate to this piece of music.
“When I was in London, since I was wearing a turban, people looked at me as if I would remove my shirt and just blow up myself,” he said. “I felt very small when I was in London, I had to explain a lot to people.”
This is one compilation that you listen to after a hard day of work. In fact you could listen to any song in the album to relax your mind. And even if you don’t understand Punjab, the mellowness is just incredible and is set to capture any anyone.
